How to write effective CTAs

The one thing most people get wrong about CTAs (Calls To Actions) is that you need to be salesy, sleezy or have some kind of outstanding offer to get them to take the action.

They also state that the Call To Action is the most important part of the text and it can make or break a lead. Or that this is the time to “do the magic.”

However all of this couldn’t be further from the truth.

If you understand how to increase your sales with writing (⬅️ if you haven’t read that yet, make sure to do now!) the CTA will be the easiest thing of the whole process.

Why CTAs do not matter as much as you think they do

1 What actually matters the most is the headline and first two to three sentences of your text. First you have to make them even pay attention to your writing and then you have to give them a reason to keep their attention on your writing.

2 If you have got that right, next focus on providing real value for the reader. (Again you should really read this if you haven’t yet. → How to increase your sales with writing)

3 And just after that you focus on your CTA. Now it actually gets quite simple.

If you have had a good headline, a good first few sentences and provided actual value, they will already be sold on you and your work.

The only thing left for you to do is to provide them with an opportunity to take action…

Most important things while crafting your CTA text

Simply just tell them the opportunity you have got for them, without overhyping it.

Make some kind of appealing offer to your reader that makes sense in the situation. Tell them transparently what they are going to get.

Do not stress them with things like “buy now or lose forever” or “offer only available today”. If your writing has been effective, they are already sold on you and what you are doing anyway - so no need to do the magic now and potentially create unnecessary friction.
